Poster vom Flamenco Festival des Juan Breva in Velez-Malaga, August 2022

Juan Breva was the stage name of Antonio Ortega Escalona, born in Vélez Málaga in 1844. He was not a gypsy (payo or gitano) and did not like the style that was in fashion  in his younger days. He sang with a more polished voice, which made him easier to understand and he became the most popular singer of the time and put the Malagueña movement within Flamenco music on the map.

He became famous, earned a lot of money and even visited the king often. But, as is not unusual for a Flamenco artist, his last years were sad and without performances, and he died, penniless, in June 1918 as 'el rey del cante malagueño', the king of Malagueña music. Fortunately, his name and legacy were honoured again in later years. A statue of him was erected in 1970, and since 1976 the annual flamenco festival in Vélez Málaga has been named after him.

Photo of the El Satillo suspension bridge in Andalusia

One of the more famous hiking trails of the Gran Senda de Malaga is El Saltillo. Also called the little brother of El Caminito del Rey (King's Path) near Malaga. But unlike its big brother, which attracts more than 300,000 hikers a year, this trail is (still) quiet to walk and above all, it is completely free. The suspension bridge has been in operation since October 2020.

The route runs on the border of the Sierra de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama nature reserve from the white mountain top Canillas de Aceituno to the next village Sedella. Halfway through this route you come across the suspension bridge 'El Saltillo' which you have to cross. During the walking route you walk along the foot of the La Maroma, the highest mountain of the province of Málaga.

B&B with Rasja & Wouter in Spain at the Costa del Sol

It has been a while since we were able to help Rasja and Wouter find a suitable location for their future B&B. In the meantime they have been successfully running Cortijo La Zapatera, in Canillas de Aceituno

Rasja & Wouter: “We have been living in Andalusia for almost 4 years now. We still really like living here in southern Spain. Not a day goes by that we don't enjoy the peace, the views and the nature. We have made new friends, speak the language and find our way in our white village, Canillas de Aceituno. The first six months of our stay we have made several improvements: the house and the flats have been given a Spanish soul, the rooms are equipped with all modern conveniences, the gardens have been planted and the various terraces got the necessary shade.

Fireworks at the costa del sol for the Noche de San Juan

Where the Scandinavians have Midsummer Night, in almost all Spanish coastal towns we celebrate La Noche de San Juan on the night of 23 or 24 June. In this night, the first half of the year is ritually closed to welcome the summer. During this night, there are several customs - which may vary from region to region - but water and fire, the symbols of purification and protection, can be found everywhere.
