Fireworks on the Costa del Sol at the night of San Juan

During the night of 23-24 June, all over Spain, people celebrate the return of summer, known as the summer solstice. In addition, entirely according to Christian tradition, the birth of Saint John the Baptist is celebrated, hence la Noche de San Juan (Johannnes was born six months before Christmas Eve, as recorded in the Gospel of Luke).

This traditional night is accompanied by much celebration and some special rituals. Central to this night are fire and water, symbols of purification and renewal, believing that water can fulfil desires, as well as being a source of happiness and fertility for all who bathe in the sea during the night of 23-24 June.

Water
In the Axarquía, the Noche de San Juan is mainly celebrated on the beach where people wash their faces in the sea, which will give beauty throughout the year. But, it is important not to look in the mirror this night , as then, the magic will not  work ! There is also plenty of swimming in the sea, which will give good health.

Fire
During this night, you will see several pyres on the beach. This is not only for atmosphere, but also being jumped over to purify yourself from evil. In addition, the fire is used to burn notes with wishes, hoping they will come true. Every region has its own customs, and here, if the wind is blowing towards the sea, you can see many lanterns with real candles carrying wishes for the coming year.

After a long night, you are also supposed to get up early the next morning of 24 June, tradition has it that you will not be tired for a year ! Apart from all these rituals, there is also plenty of barbecuing on the beaches, because no holiday goes by in Spain without eating. This also makes it the only night when campfires are allowed on beaches.

If you are in the area on 23 June, it is definitely worth taking a look at one of these beach festivals to see the festivities and rituals with your own eyes and join in the celebrations.
