Día de la Hispanidad commemorates Columbus' discovery of 'the new world' America under the Spanish flag on 12 October 1492. This day is not only celebrated in Spain, but in a total of 27 countries on 5 different continents.

Dia de la Hispanidad, also known as Columbus Day, has different names in the different Spanish-speaking countries. In Latin America, the day is called Día de la Raza (Day of the Race), and in Spain the celebration has officially been called Fiesta Nacional de España since 1987.

Día de la Hispanidad in Spain is dedicated to the Spanish empire that emerged after the discovery of America by Columbus that allowed Spain to become the most powerful country in the world. This holiday is celebrated across the country with special activities such as parades and bullfighting (which is very much in the decline these days !) . In the Spanish capital Madrid, a large military parade takes place where the Spanish flag is raised under the watchful eye of Spain's King Felipe and the prime minister.

This day is a public holiday, so schools, government buildings, businesses and shops are closed. It is good to know that Spanish museums can be visited for free on this day, but keep in mind that this is why it is extra busy on this day.

In the villages of La Axarquía, masses are usually held for the patron saint of the village, and in the afternoon visitors, family and friends alike  can enjoy dining on local specialities and dancing to music.
