One of the more famous hiking trails of the Gran Senda de Malaga is El Saltillo. Also called the little brother of El Caminito del Rey (King's Path) near Malaga. But unlike its big brother, which attracts more than 300,000 hikers a year, this trail is (still) quiet to walk and above all, it is completely free. The suspension bridge has been in operation since October 2020.

The route runs on the border of the Sierra de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama nature reserve from the white mountain top Canillas de Aceituno to the next village Sedella. Halfway through this route you come across the suspension bridge 'El Saltillo' which you have to cross. During the walking route you walk along the foot of the La Maroma, the highest mountain of the province of Málaga.

The route requires some hiking experience and you should not be afraid of heights. Also, the walk is not suitable for children under 12 years and do not bring dogs. The paths can be a bit narrow and crumbly but it is a wonderful route for the adventurous hiker!

If you want to walk the route from Canillas de Aceituno, you can park your car in the parking garage of the village or near the former restaurant La Maroma. From here you will find signs that point you towards the route to the starting point.

From the suspension bridge you can continue to the village of Sedella. In total the length of the walk is then 9 km. Keep in mind that you need to arrange transportation to get back to the starting point. There are very limited buses to and from Canillas de Aceituno. Another option is of course to walk the same route back after visiting the suspension bridge. In total, the route will take about 3 to 4 hours. Make sure you have enough water and some food for the road, because during the hike there is no possibility to get refreshments and also take a jacket or something, it can be a bit chilly 'up there'.

It is also possible to start the trail in Sedella. From here it is less crowded than if you start from Canillas de Aceituno. Just past the entrance to the village (at the arch) are the signs to start the hike from this village.

No matter from which side you start the route, the views are beautiful and the scenery changes constantly. One moment you walk between the pine trees overlooking the village of Canillas de Aceituno and the next you have endless views into the mountains and out to the Mediterranean. It is a route which, of course depending on the season, can be walked in a nice calm and with a little luck you will spot Iberian goats like we did.
