La Vinuela reservoir at low water levelJournalist: Eugenio Cabeza

After the many autumn and winter rains, there is a more hopeful outlook for the La Viñuela reservoir than a year ago. Although Lake Viñuela is still only at 21.7% of its capacity, this is already a significant improvement on last year. The provincial authority, the Diputación de Málaga, is confident that this will improve further in the coming months and has therefore decided to invest €1.06 million in renovating and improving the recreational area around the reservoir.

A new look for La Viñuela reservoir

The project is part of a wider environmental and recreational plan, which means new picnic tables, benches and lampposts will be installed, green areas will be extended, parking areas will be redeveloped and the playground and dog park will be improved. The investment aims to make the area more attractive to both local residents and tourists, and to preserve and enhance the natural beauty of the area as the reservoir has aged significantly over time.

An important step in the right direction has already been taken around the La Viñuela reservoir; nearly 41,000 trees and plants have already been replanted. Now work continues on improving recreational facilities. It´s a great that the Diputación de Málaga has already approved the direct grant of over a million euro for the municipality of La Viñuela to start the work.

The project is part of a larger strategy of the Diputación to strengthen the interior of Málaga province through nature conservation and the promotion of tourism and recreation in nature. Other projects that have become successful in the region include the Caminito del Rey, the Gran Senda de Málaga, the Saltillo in Canillas de Aceituno and support for the Sierra de las Nievas national park.

What is planned?

The work will take about four months and includes:
* Replacement of picnic tables and benches with new, prefabricated wooden ones.
* Removal of outdated barbecues and other worn-out facilities.
* Creation of new landscaped areas with Mediterranean planting.
* Refurbishment and expansion of parking spaces.
* Renovation of the playground with new play equipment and an upgrade of the dog park, including an agility course.
* Refurbishment of the access road and football pitch.
* In addition, the existing toilets will be renovated, the location of waste bins will be reviewed, and slopes will be planted with native shrubs.

A boost for tourism and nature conservation

With the investments, the Diputación de Málaga hopes not only to support the local community, but also to further boost tourism in the region. The planned improvements will make the La Viñuela area even more attractive to visitors, while protecting and enhancing the natural environment. When will you come and have a look at the La Viñuela reservoir?
