Fireworks at the costa del sol for the Noche de San Juan

Where the Scandinavians have Midsummer Night, in almost all Spanish coastal towns we celebrate La Noche de San Juan on the night of 23 or 24 June. In this night, the first half of the year is ritually closed to welcome the summer. During this night, there are several customs - which may vary from region to region - but water and fire, the symbols of purification and protection, can be found everywhere.

They will not look in the mirror during the night, as it will destroy the beauty. In our region, it is more usual to dive into the sea around midnight, to wash off the first few months and for good health for the rest of the year. Lanterns are also lowered into the sea with notes containing wishes. Sometimes this is not possible because of the onshore wind, and then they are thrown into one of the many fires on the beach. The assumption is that these wishes will then come true. Apart from these rituals, it is a very pleasant evening and night on the beaches of the Costa del Sol. Spontaneous barbecues and parties are not unusual. The idea is to get up early the next morning, because you will not be tired for a year ...

If you get the chance to visit any of the coastal towns during la Noche de San Juan, you will undoubtedly be impressed by the unique atmosphere and festive enthusiasm that pervades the region. It's an experience you won't forget!
