markt Periana 1

La Axarquía offers a wide range of lively markets. We already wrote a blog about the region's daily markets some time ago. A fun market to visit is the one in Viñuela, which takes place every first and third Sunday of the month on the roundabout, just when you enter the village. This mercadillo brings together local creatives and artists to display their creations, from handmade jewellery and pottery to textiles and paintings. It is the perfect place to buy authentic Andalusian souvenirs and enjoy the welcoming atmosphere of the region.

One of the most popular day markets in the region is the weekly mercadillo in Caleta de Vélez, which takes place every Saturday morning, close to the ALDI. Here, visitors can enjoy a wide range of products, from fresh (local) fruits and vegetables to artisan jewellery and clothes. The market also offers delicious local delicacies including olives, cheese and fried fish AND, because it is near the beach, you can have a nice fish dish on the promenade after shopping.

Finally, we also like to mention the big Rastro (flea and antique market) held every Sunday between 10am and 2pm here in Nerja. You'll see everything from Andalusian antiques, Moroccan rugs, jars and spices, to the contents of someone's garage. It's always nice and busy and you can actually always find something you might not have thought you needed 😉.
