Slow living in the villages of La Axarquía: enjoy peace, nature and connection
If you are looking for a quiet and peaceful environment to live or stay in on a regular basis, a small village in southern Spain could be a perfect choice. Particularly in La Axarquía, 'our' region in the province of Málaga where you will find beautiful villages and hamlets not yet affected by mass tourism. Here you can enjoy a “tranquilo” life, taking the time to relax and enjoy the simple things in life, just like the locals do.
One of the biggest advantages of living in a small village in this region, is the connection with nature. You will wake up to the sounds of birds, munching goats and breathe fresh air while enjoying the beautiful landscape. Life is peaceful and you have the opportunity to enjoy long walks or cycling in nature. Local farmers sell their fresh produce at the market, allowing you to enjoy deliciously healthy as well as affordable meals. Moreover, property prices in the villages of La Axarquía are generally much cheaper than those of the cities.
Living in a village here also brings a strong sense of community, both with locals and other expats. Residents are often friendly and helpful, and village life is all about social interactions. With great regularity, fiestas are organised to honour local traditions, think Día de Andalucía, Semana Santa and all the ferias organised in summer, and it is easy to take part in activities such as yoga or ceramics classes and local festivals. If you are interested in learning the language and culture of Spain, living in a village here is the perfect opportunity to do so. Although the Andalusian accent can sometimes be a challenge !!).
Of course, living in a small village also has some downsides. For instance, there is generally less choice of amenities and shops, so you may have to travel to a nearby village or town to find all of the things you need. Public transport is also less frequent than in the city, which can make it difficult to get around without a car.
But, if you accept these challenges, living in a village in La Axarquía can be an experience you will never forget. You can enjoy slow living and connect with nature and the local community.
