Golfing in La Axarquía: a mix of nature, history and relaxation
The Axarquía, the region in the east of the Costa del Sol that we specifically focus on, is known for its good weather, tranquility, rugged mountainous landscapes, delicious food and, for golf lovers like me, for the many golf courses that can be played in this region. To be honest, this was also a point on our list to eventually live in this region. Recently, I started playing again every Friday with a club of friends, mostly near Canillas de Aceituno but occasionally we go a bit further afield to explore yet another course. And whether you are an experienced golfer or just starting out, the golf courses in this region offer something for everyone. Below I share some of my favourite courses:
We start with Baviera Golf, surrounded by tropical avocado and mango groves in a valley; a fine climate for golf. This flat 18-hole course, designed by Ryder Cup player José María Cañizares, is known for its wide greens, water features and diversity of obstacles. Hole 12, a par 5 of 532 metres, is the most difficult of the course due to its long layout. This hole does offer spectacular views of the surrounding Sierra Tejeda Almijara and Alhama mountain ranges and the Mediterranean Sea. The clubhouse has a very nice terrace overlooking hole 18 and a good restaurant. Next to the driving range, in the middle of the course, you will also find a small chiringuito for a snack and drink on the go. More info: https://bavieragolf.com/
Añoreta Golf, in Torre de Benalgabón, near Rincón de la Victoria, also known as "el Paraíso del Sol" (Paradise of the Sun), is one of my favourites. Coincidentally also designed by José María Cañizares, this course is set up so that you can (well, if possible 😊) show off all your golfing skills while walking to enjoy sweeping views of the Mediterranean Sea and the city of Málaga. Especially the second tee on hole 10 has truly phenomenal views. Because of the long distances between holes, it is recommended to book a buggy. A few years ago, the old clubhouse and restaurant underwent a major overhaul. In terms of appearance, it is definitely more up to date, unfortunately the service in the restaurant has not improved. If, as we do, you use the twilight start times, there is nothing to eat once you have run your lap. A big shame. The caddy master, on the other hand, is super friendly and helpful! Next, the Parador de Málaga Golf, Andalusia's oldest golf course. This golf course, right on the Mediterranean coast, offers beautiful views over the blue water as well as the airport runway. The design of the course by Tom Simpson makes use of the natural elements with challenging holes that surprise professionals and amateurs alike. One of the most characteristic holes is hole 12, a par 5 of 498 metres long, which runs parallel to the sea and is surrounded by many trees. Control on every stroke is very important here. Near the Parador de Málaga Golf is the Guadalhorce Club de Golf. The course is 6,202 metres long, with an original design by Kosti Kuronen that was redesigned by Miguel Ángel Jiménez. It is a par 72 that can be considered long. Located on an old agricultural estate on the banks of the Guadalhorce River, this18-hole course offers a challenging experience amid beautiful natural scenery. The most striking hole here is 18, a par 4 of 407 metres and offers stunning views of the course's largest green, while trees and bunkers surround the fairway. The historic 18th-century mansion, known as Cortijo de Colmenares, which now serves as the clubhouse, adds a touch of ´old´ charm to the golf experience. East of the city of Málaga lies the Real Club de Golf El Candado, one of the Costa del Sol's historic golf courses, close to the Mediterranean Sea and just 5 minutes from the centre of Málaga. This 9-hole course with a total length of over 2,300 metres offers room for challenging play with many elevation changes. A notable hole is the 6th, a par 4 of 353 metres long. This hole requires precision and strategy, as players have to find their way between bunkers and trees to a narrow green. The spectacular views of both the mountains and the sea add something extra to the game here. More information: https://www.clubelcandado.com/golf/
Finally, there is the beautiful Antequera Golf Course, also known as Golf Torre Hacho. Located in the heart of Andalusia, this course offers a perfect blend of history, sportsmanship and nature. It is an 18-hole golf course, Par-72, with a total area of 50 hectares. Again designed by José María Cañizares in 2003, Antequera Golf offers players of all levels a challenging and enjoyable game. The course is beautifully integrated into its natural surroundings, surrounded by rolling hills, olive groves and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, including the famous formations of El Torcal. One of the most striking features of this golf course is the historic Torre Hacho, a 16th-century watchtower that recalls the region's rich history. After a round, it is also good to relax on the fine terrace of the stylish restaurant. Different and unique, at Antequera Golf each hole tests players' skill, precision and experience. Besides golfing, you can enjoy plenty of other activities and sights in the Antequera area. Explore the historic city of Antequera, with impressive monuments such as the Alcazaba, dolmens and beautiful churches. Or visit, as I mentioned earlier, the nearby El Torcal natural park and hike through the unique limestone formations that are millions of years old or go to the lobo park (wolf park), a non-profit organisation dedicated to the research and study of wolves and the education of dogs. A little further on is the start of the beautiful hiking trail Caminito del Rey, which is built into the walls of the Gaitanes gorge via terraces, 3 km long and barely 1 metre wide here and there. The path starts in the municipality of Ardales, runs through Antequera and ends in El Chorro (Álora).
Back to Golf, green fees for the aforementioned courses vary depending on the season and playing time. On average, fees range between € 50 and € 125 for 18 holes. Twilights (late afternoon hours) may offer more advantageous rates. Keep in mind that these prices can change, so it is always best to check the golf course's website for the most up-to-date rates. For golfers who do not bring their own equipment, most courses also offer the option of renting golf clubs, trolleys and, of course, buggies at reasonable rates. Renting a complete set of clubs costs around € 30.
Have fun golfing in ´my´ piece of Andalusia
