A Tribute to Paco de Lucía

The promise: ´As her company celebrates its 25th anniversary, Sara Baras (53) pays tribute to the guitar genius par excellence, Paco de Lucía, through a major tour. From the respect, affection and love they cherished for each other, Vuela was born, a show made to be unforgettable.´

Reality: it is more than true, we were all deeply impressed last Sunday in the magnificent Teatro Cervantes, heart of Málaga city. In over 2 hours and 15 minutes (without intermission)! we saw 15 unique dance and music pieces starring, of course, Sara with her accompanying dancers and a really sublime ensemble of guitarists, cajon players, violinists and 2 fantastic Flamenco singers. Each piece revolved around one word which, by transforming this into flamenco language, became a fascinating eye and ear spectacle in four acts, weaving together a grand story. A true homage to ´the genius of Algeciras´. Our hands were broken, our voices asking for more and more. And we got just that on this last night of her tour in Málaga.

Wood, reminding us of the power of roots, the warmth of being.
In this part, we heard the ticking of wooden sticks, the strumming of guitars and the rattling of shoes on the floor. It was intense and exciting.

Sea, inviting us to sail in passion and be like water.
Barefoot dancers, wearing dresses as if they were made of water, in rushing choreographies. Playful, light, romantic almost.

Death, a way of exploring human emotions from the deepest depths.
Here it got heavy, even more intense, with great singing that pierced through the marrow. Almost moved to tears, we watched, there was incense and you could feel the sadness of the dancers carried by the music.

Flying, the only way to escape without fleeing, just to be carried away by celebration and joy, a chance that only music, dance and feelings can give us. This last part made it cheerful again, lighter, but certainly as surprising, including a group dance with fans that we watched with amazement. And again some solos by Sara that we watched with open mouths.

It was the second Sara Baras show we have seen and we know for sure, the next one we will be the first to book again. We wouldn't miss it for anything and besides, a good spot in the Cervantes Theatre (around the middle on ground floor or 1st piso) only makes the experience even better.

Sara Baras and her team are still on tour in the coming months and all we can say is: ´if they come near, you really should go and see them.´
