Driving through the rolling hills of La Axarquía, surrounded by vineyards, almond trees and olive groves, you’ll discover the white village of Sayalonga. Located just a short distance from the coast yet completely immersed in nature and tranquility, this authentic Andalusian village feels like a place where time slows down. Narrow streets wind past whitewashed houses decorated with colorful flowers, while every corner reveals new views over the mountains and the Mediterranean Sea.

A white village full of Moorish charm
Like many of Andalusia’s white villages, Sayalonga still carries strong traces of its Moorish past. The village originated during the Arab occupation, which is reflected in its maze of narrow streets, steep alleyways and traditional architecture. The whitewashed facades help keep the houses cool during the hot summer months, while wooden doors and flower-filled balconies create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

At the heart of the village lies the Church of Santa Catalina, built in Mudéjar style, where Christian and Moorish influences beautifully blend together. Small village squares shaded by trees invite locals and visitors alike to slow down and enjoy the peaceful rhythm of Andalusian life.

Spain’s unique round cemetery
One of Sayalonga’s most remarkable landmarks is its famous round cemetery — the only one of its kind in Spain. Over the years, this unusual circular cemetery has become the symbol of the village and attracts visitors from across the region. Its striking architecture and peaceful atmosphere make it one of the most photographed spots in La Axarquía.

Surrounded by mountains and nature
Sayalonga is perfectly positioned between the Sierra Almijara mountains and the Mediterranean coast, offering the best of both worlds: peaceful mountain living with the sea always within reach. Several hiking trails begin in and around the village, leading through ancient mule tracks, vineyards and hidden viewpoints overlooking the valley and coastline.

The surrounding landscape is known for its agricultural terraces filled with grapevines, almond trees and olive groves. Sayalonga is also part of the famous Ruta del Sol y del Vino — the Route of Sun and Wine — a scenic route connecting some of the most beautiful villages in La Axarquía.

Gastronomy and local traditions
Life in Sayalonga still revolves around local traditions, seasonal products and Andalusian gastronomy. In the village’s small restaurants and tapas bars, you can enjoy authentic dishes such as ajo blanco (a cold almond and garlic soup), local goat cheese, traditional stews and sweet moscatel wines from the region.

The village is also famous for the cultivation of the níspero, or loquat fruit. Every spring, locals celebrate the Día del Níspero, a lively village festival filled with music, local food and traditional Andalusian festivities.

Authentic Andalusia close to the coast
What makes Sayalonga so special is its unique combination of authenticity and accessibility. Despite its peaceful mountain setting, the beaches of Algarrobo Costa are only a ten-minute drive away. Málaga city and the international airport are also easily accessible, making Sayalonga a popular destination for both holidaymakers and those looking for a second home in Andalusia.

Here, you can still experience the true Andalusian lifestyle: quiet village squares, long lunches in the sun, walks through the mountains and evenings where the sky slowly turns orange above the hills of La Axarquía.
