Entrance to Sedella with the Moorish gate

High in the mountains of La Axarquía, on the edge of the Sierra de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park, lies Sedella. This authentic white village sits at around 700 meters above sea level and is surrounded by dramatic mountain landscapes, olive groves and winding hiking trails. With the impressive peak of La Maroma watching over it, Sedella feels like a place where nature, history and silence come together.

A village with Moorish roots
Sedella has a rich and layered history dating back to Roman and Moorish times. Once known as “Xedalia”, the village still reflects its Moorish heritage in its narrow streets, whitewashed houses and small squares that climb up the mountainside.

At the highest point of the village stands the Church of San Andrés, built in the 16th century. Its tower shows clear Moorish influences and, together with historic buildings such as the Casa Torreón, forms an important part of Sedella’s architectural heritage. The village tells the story of centuries of cultural layers shaped by Romans, Moors and Christians.

Nature, mountains and hiking routes
Sedella is a true paradise for nature lovers and hikers. It lies directly next to the Sierra de Tejeda and Almijara Natural Park, an area known for its rugged landscapes, deep valleys and breathtaking views stretching all the way to the coast.

One of the most famous hiking routes in the area is the El Saltillo trail, which connects Sedella with nearby Canillas de Aceituno. Along the way, you cross narrow mountain paths, dramatic gorges and hanging bridges, all while enjoying panoramic views of the region.

Authentic village life and traditions
Life in Sedella is peaceful and closely connected to agriculture and nature. The surrounding landscape is filled with vineyards and olive groves, and local cuisine is hearty and traditional. Typical dishes include chivo al ajillo (goat with garlic), choto al vino (young goat in wine) and rustic stews made with local ingredients.

Village life is still shaped by traditional festivities and religious celebrations, where the community gathers in the squares and streets. These moments offer a glimpse into the strong sense of community that still defines Sedella today.

Peace, views and pure Andalusian charm
What makes Sedella so special is its combination of tranquility, nature and authenticity. This is not a tourist village, but a place where daily life continues at its own slow rhythm. The silence of the streets, the scent of the mountains and the sweeping views make it one of the most untouched villages in La Axarquía.

Despite its secluded feel, the coast is never far away. The beaches of Torre del Mar and the Costa del Sol can be reached in a short drive, offering the perfect balance between mountain living and seaside access.
