On the banks of the Benamargosa River, in the fertile valley of the Axarquía, lies the white village of Benamargosa. Unlike many mountain villages in the region, Benamargosa is located in a relatively flat landscape, surrounded by orange groves, avocado, and mango plantations. The village radiates calm and greenery, forming a natural link between the inland and the coast.

Benamargosa has approximately 1,500 inhabitants and sits around 150 meters above sea level. Thanks to its location in the riverbed, the landscape here is noticeably lush. Water has always played a central role in the village’s daily life and history, which has long been known for its agriculture and irrigation systems.

The name Benamargosa has Arabic origins and roughly translates as “sons of the river.” During Moorish rule, the area was developed into an important agricultural center, with a sophisticated network of acequias (irrigation canals) that enabled intensive farming and laid the foundation for the valley’s fertility.

After the Reconquista in the 15th century, Benamargosa remained primarily an agricultural village. The river provided not only water but also a natural route through the valley. Floods were part of life in Benamargosa but also contributed to the fertility of the surrounding lands.

Exploring the Village
The village center is compact and easy to navigate. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, a 16th-century church, forms the religious heart of the village. Nearby are small squares and streets where local life unfolds and neighbors meet daily.

Benamargosa is also notable for its lavaderos, traditional washing places along the river that once served as social meeting points for villagers. The old bridge over the river is another recognizable feature, reminding visitors of historical connections within the valley.

A walk along the river provides a glimpse of the green character of the surroundings. The combination of water, shady trees, and open fields makes Benamargosa one of the most fertile and peaceful spots in the Axarquía.

Festivals and Traditions
Village life in Benamargosa is defined by traditional festivals that are deeply connected to the land and community. In May, San Isidro is celebrated with a romería through the valley, featuring decorated carts, music and community gatherings that honour the patron saint of agriculture.

In July the annual Benamargosa Country Fair (Fiesta del Campo) takes place — a market‑style village celebration highlighting local products, traditional dishes and music, offering a delicious insight into Axarquía’s agricultural culture.

August brings the Feria de Benamargosa, a summer village festival with music, dancing and activities for all ages. Benamargosa is also known for its La Candelaria celebration in February, with bonfires and community gatherings to mark the end of winter.

Semana Santa is observed here with quiet processions through the streets, where tradition and community spirit take centre stage.

Benamargosa is a village where water, agriculture and tradition come together. Its green surroundings, tranquil character and central location make it an appealing place for those who want to experience authentic Andalusian village life, with the coast and larger towns of the Axarquía within easy reach.
