Cómpeta

With around 4,000 inhabitants, Cómpeta is one of the charming mid-sized white villages in the Axarquía, located at about 650 meters altitude in the Sierra Almijara, near the border of Málaga province. The village is surrounded by vast vineyards and olive groves, offering stunning views of the coastline and the hinterland. Its narrow, winding streets and whitewashed houses make Cómpeta a typical example of an Andalusian mountain village with a rich cultural tradition.
History
The name Cómpeta probably comes from the Latin ‘Compita,’ referring to crossroads or gatherings, hinting at the village’s central location in a network of old trade routes. The region has a long history of agriculture and winemaking, traditions that remain vibrant today. Archaeological finds indicate that the area was inhabited during Roman times.
During the Moorish period, Cómpeta flourished as an agricultural village thanks to fertile soil and natural springs. After the Reconquista, the village came under Christian rule, but Moorish influences remained visible, especially in the architecture and street layout.
Exploring the village
Cómpeta is known for its lively village square, Plaza Almijara, which is the heart of social life. Here you’ll find various cafés and tapas bars where locals and visitors gather. The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, built in the 16th century, dominates the square with its whitewashed façade and simple yet elegant architecture.
The narrow streets, decorated with colorful flowers, ceramics, and traditional white walls, invite visitors to get lost. You can also admire local crafts and taste the famous sweet dessert wine, ‘Moscatel,’ which originates from the vineyards around the village.
For nature lovers, there are beautiful hiking trails leading from the village into the mountains and valleys, such as the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park, where you can experience pristine nature and spectacular views.
Festivals and traditions
One of the highlights of the year is the Fiesta de la Vendimia, the grape harvest festival celebrated every September. This festival focuses on local winemaking and includes music, dancing, parades, and of course, plenty of wine tastings.
On August 15th, the feast of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, the village’s patron saint, is celebrated with religious processions, folkloric dances, and fireworks.
Semana Santa in Cómpeta is also a moving experience, with solemn processions that bring a moment of quiet to the village.
Throughout the year, smaller local festivals and markets showcase the village’s rich cultural life.
