With its 1,100 inhabitants, Alfarnate, located in the northwest of the Axarquía near the Granada border, is one of the smaller white villages. It is the highest village in the Axarquía, with streets at 925 meters above sea level, but unlike most white villages, its streets are not very steep. Because of its altitude, the area is sometimes called the Pyrenees of the South, and in winter Alfarnate and neighboring Alfarnatejo often see snow. The surroundings are beautiful, as Alfarnate lies in a kind of green valley surrounded by high rocky mountain ranges.
This beautiful village offers the perfect balance between authentic Andalusian charm and modern amenities. The narrow, winding streets with whitewashed houses and colorful flower pots invite you to wander endlessly. Here you can still experience real Spanish life, far away from mass tourism, yet with the coast and the city within easy reach.
